I wasn’t sure whether to put a post on about Hue or the sleeper train but then thought why not, I guess this blog is a mini diary of my adventures so here we go… I’ve merged the two into one post…
Overnight Sleeper train from Hanoi to Hue
So I was so excited when I found out part of our tour would be an overnight 14 hour train journey that meant sleeping in cabins – What a memory and experience it would be. However, to be honest it wasn’t as great as I thought it’d be! Truth be told if it wasn’t for the people I was with, who made it a good laugh, I probably would have hated it. So luckily, it was a laugh. 8 of us all squeezed into one cabin (that sleeps 4) and passed the 14 hour journey by a marathon card game of ‘shithead’ ! Haha, basically the loser is labelled the ‘shithead’… gotta love the Aussies and their blunt humour, call a spade a spade n all.. love it !
Anyway, despite the small bunk beds and the rough jolting of the train every so often, resulting in a loud bang coming from somewhere, and my 3 snoring cabin-mates I actually enjoyed the experience and at least I can say I’ve now done it. Would I do it again? Damn right I would – but only with some awesome company, not on my own; I am a girly wimp after all…
The Imperial city of Hue
Totally underwhelmed with Hue sorry to say – which is actually pronounced ‘way’… which I find weird straight of the bat. We only stayed one night, which was more than enough in my view. The city itself used to be the capitol of Vietnam which is interesting as apart from the city walls and the once palace type set up for the king, there ain’t much else in Hue. We did visit a Pagoda and a tomb of a once king but that’s it really. Oh but we did make incense!! This I loved since my flat was always so cloudy with incense it was actually hard to breathe at time – but I loved it !!
But, easily the best and most fun part of being in Hue was the night out we had – which was only in a wee bar across from the hotel – but it was hilarious; and obviously very drunken. 4 of us were left at the end of the night and we got chatting to a local Vietnamese girl – who I actually thought worked there but later asked and appears she lived next door to the bar!! – prob one of them weirdo’s who lurk about bars every night on their own – a barfly I think they’re called. “I called crazy” (in my best vietnamese accent). Haha, seriously! That was her name, you cant make this shit up! So anyway Crazy taught us the funniest and catchiest (if thats a word?!) song ever – a local vietnamese song which went like this…. “Vietnaaaaaam, Ho Chi Minh. Vietnaaaaam, Ho Chi Minh. Vietnaaaaam, Ho Chi Minh” etc etc – you get the jist I’m sure but I am well aware this is a you-had-to-be-there situation. Crazy aslo had the funniest and most annoying laugh I’ve ever heard in my life… the only way to describe it is of similar noise to a Hygena.. in fact you need to listen to this. Luckily for you lovely readers one of the Aussie guys got this on film and uploaded to you tube, so here is the link. Check out the girls laugh at the end of the song… fuckin funny!
